Aizgavieni Celebration in Dagda
On February 22 at 2:00 PM everyone is invitedto joyfully bid farewell to winter!
In February, or sometimes in early March, the Mardi Gras is celebrated, also known in Latgale as Aizgavieni, which is observed as a traditional festivity marking the symbolic end of winter. Aizgavieni is a celebration of the anticipation of spring and should be celebrated joyfully – with lots of laughter, singing, dancing, eating, a last chance to dress in costumes, sledding from hills, visiting friends afar, and thinking of distant plans to ensure a successful new harvest year and that everything goes well and comes to fruition.
At 2:00 PM, local groups and neighbors will engage in lively games and communal singing in the square by the Dagda Cultural Center.
Aizgavieni never comes empty-handed, so attendees will be treated to pancakes. Everyone will also have the chance to warm up with a cup of tea.
From 3:00 PM, everyone is invited to a comedy performance in the large hall of the Dagda Cultural Center. Comedy is always fun and exciting. There can never be too much laughter and joy. Laughter extends life, so who wouldn't want to live longer? Aivars Banka's comedy “Zombie” – a one and a half hour long, high-quality, and effective laughter therapy. Admission 3 EUR.
See you there!
