As the poet Māris Melgalvs' milestone anniversary (2027) approaches, we invite you to the poetry concert “The Butterfly of God. Māris Melgalvs” on October 11th, which also serves as the first prelude event for the book of the same name expected in 2026. This will be the first extensive published edition about the poet.

Poet Māris Melgalvs is a significant figure of the 1980s. As stated by literary scholar, Doctor of Philology Zanda Gūtmane: “His poetry, with its playfully ironic tone, reveals the world of a free individual, thus opposing the conformism of the late Soviet era and expressing the life perception of a certain generation. It forms an important tradition in the development of Latvian poetry. Melgalvs' poetry is still relevant today, when freedom is threatened under the shadow of the aggressor's war. This is also evidenced by the recently released film about composer Juris Kulakovs, whose songs set to Melgalvs' poetry lyrics performed by the rock band “Pērkons” have become folklorized and embedded in the Latvian collective memory, often without even knowing the author's name.”

Our identity would be unimaginable without the poetry of Māris Melgalvs.

Participants in the poetry concert include: members of the rock band “Pērkons”, Latvian music legends Ieva Akuratere (vocals) and Leons Sējāns (guitar), composer and singer Lauma Kazaka (vocals, guitar), and actress and sculptor Maija Arvena (poetry).

The number of places in the museum is limited, so please collect free invitations.
