Performance "Divide"
The Chekhov Theatre and the investigative journalism center "Re:Baltica" introduce a new, socially relevant format of theatrical expression in Latvia, bringing together live journalism, dramaturgy, and discussion. The dramaturgy of the performance is based on "Divide", a four-part documentary series by "Re:Baltica", which was released at the beginning of 2024. In the documentary series, journalists explore sharp clashes of opinions in society, their origins, and their implications for national security and welfare.
During the backstage of the performance, with the participation of journalists, Chekhov Theatre actors, and the audience, there will be an opportunity to delve into behind-the-scenes of the series and episodes not included in the series, comparing what politicians say on camera and off-camera, showing journalists' motivations, doubts, and stories of experiences, as well as the reactions and feelings of the people filmed before and after the series is aired.
The director of the performance is Valters Sīlis. Alongside the Chekhov Theatre actors, the performance will also involve journalists from "Re:Baltica" - Sanita Jemberga, Inga Spriņģe, Inese Braže, Annija Petrova, as well as partners from the only independent media in Daugavpils, Chayka.lv, as a significant part of the series was filmed in the second largest city in Latvia. The question that the participants of this performance, together with the audience, will try to answer is similar to the one posed by the creators of the series to their characters: what is better - pleasant aversion or unpleasant conversation?
The Chekhov Theatre invites all interested parties to their home who are ready for a meaningful conversation about the most complex issues of a divided environment, as after the performance, the audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions to the participants of the performance.
