Jānis Rokpelnis and the Latgalian and Livonian Poetry Evening
17:00 at the Riga Latvian Society House, there will be a literary evening with Jānis Rokpelnis, celebrating his 80th anniversary.
“In recent years, Jānis Rokpelnis has become more concise in his poetry, giving existential significance to the expression of wordplay and using phonetic cacophony and metrical irregularity to represent the sharp edges of life. However, perhaps the most crucial aspect is what Rokpelnis has not done—he has not grown old in his poetry…” – Ivars Šteinbergs.
Featuring: Jānis Rokpelnis. Hosted by: Kārlis Vērdiņš.
Meanwhile, at 18:00, a Latgalian and Livonian poetry evening is planned at the "conTakts" bar in the Tallinn Quarter.
For a long time officially unrecognized and pushed to the periphery, only in the restored Republic of Latvia have Latgalian and Livonian poets regained full rights and a voice, forming a part of our contemporary cultural wealth, affirming that our strength lies in diversity.
Participants include: Raibīs, Dagneja, Juoņs Ryučāns, Karls Pajusalu. Translations by Valts Ernštreits.
Both residents of Riga and visitors from all over Latvia are invited to discover our local poetry and poets!
