The Kokle Weaves the Uniqueness of the Livonians and Suiti.
The special charm of Kurzeme is formed by both the Baltic Sea coast and the two distinctive cultural spaces of Kurzeme – the Livonian and Suiti. Each of these cultural spaces has its own musical heritage, but playing the kokle has been characteristic of both the Livonians and the Suiti since ancient times.
We invite enthusiasts of all ages to participate in free introductory lessons and masterclasses in kokle playing, educational sessions about the kokle in Kurzeme over the centuries, and a bagpipe playing masterclass to promote the learning of Kurzeme's unique cultural heritage in an interesting and unprecedented way.
Let's explore and experience the wonderful synergy of Livonian and Suiti performances on the 29th–30th of August 2025 in masterclasses, with participants then joining in a concluding joint concert 'Kokle Gently Strums Across Kurzeme' on the 30th of August at the Livonian Gathering House in Kolka and in the Ancient Fire Night ritual on the coast in Kolka.
Concert guests: kokle players from the folklore group 'Rīgas danči' of the Riga Latvian Society, bagpipers from the Suiti folklore group 'Suitu dūdenieki', the Suiti kokle player association 'Četri vēji', and the ethno group 'Alka' from Klaipėda, Lithuania.
The learning of kokle playing will be taught by ethnomusicologist Ansis Jansons. Kokles will be provided, though participants may also use their own. Participation is free of charge; however, meals and accommodations are not provided.
We look forward to receiving applications by the 25th of August 2025.
