Insect Night 2024
The association "Āžu miesta rezidence" is organizing the "Insect Night in Āžu miests", where under the guidance of entomologist Rūta Abaja, participants will have the opportunity to get to know the smallest residents of Viesīte. While waiting for darkness to fall, visitors will be entertained by the singer Ilmārs Pumpurs, playing guitar and performing songs by Imants Kalniņš and other authors.
Insects are the most diverse group of animals in the world. In Latvia, there are approximately 10,000-15,000 species, but the exact number is still undetermined. Many insects are active during the night and therefore less familiar. As the sun sets and using light traps, sphinx moths, fireflies, beetles, and other insects emerge.
Identifying insects will be aided by entomologist Rūta Abaja, a member of the Latvian Entomological Society's board, a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Solutions, and a certified nature expert. Since June nights are too bright, these small friends can only be seen late in the evening after 22:00. A special screen will be illuminated in the courtyard of Āžu miesta rezidence, where visitors can learn all about insect life and their role in the natural ecosystem.
Before the insects arrive, the night in Viesīte will be filled with music by the singer, ethnomusicologist, and master of folk music instruments at the association "Skaņumāja", Ilmārs Pumpurs. Although more often heard playing in folk music ensembles, this time his solo performance will be accompanied by a guitar. Melodies by Imants Kalniņš and others will be heard under the clear sky of the residence's courtyard.
Other events will also take place this summer at Āžu miesta rezidence - on July 5, the premiere of the play "Gadsimta lapsu medības" by Elizabete Haferes will be performed by the Viesīte amateur theater "Vēris". The performance will also feature the vocal instrumental ensemble "Andžas brandža" from Leimaņu Tautas nams and Zasa Secondary School. On August 2, on the eve of Viesīte city festival, the Firefighters' Ball will take place, with music by the Valmiera Volunteer Firefighters' Brass Band. All events are free of charge.
The "Insect Night in Āžu miests" will be held in the courtyard of Āžu miesta rezidence in Viesīte, at 2 Amatnieku Street. Entrance to the courtyard is free from 21:00. The event is organized by the association "Āžu miesta rezidence" with financial support from the Jēkabpils district municipality.
