Mask. Thunder. A Cappella
The mixed choir "Mask" from Marupe municipality Babite Cultural Education Center, under the direction of conductor Jānis Ozols, has combined choir music with rock music, creating a unique concert program "Mask. Thunder. A Cappella", where the voices of the choir will resonate with the songs of the legendary Latvian rock group "Pērkons". From the group's most melancholic ballads to powerful and sing-along songs - the combination of Latvian rock and choir music can be truly magnificent, and "Mask" is ready to demonstrate it on November 16 at the Sigulda Concert Hall White Piano.
In the concert program, the audience will enjoy eleven legendary "Pērkons" hits in an a cappella performance, including "We Depend on Each Other", "At the White Page", "Green Song", "Ballad about a Swan", "Skating Rink", "Almost a Folk Song" and others. The choir "Mask" will perform "Pērkons" compositions in specially created a cappella arrangements by Andris Sējāns, Edgars Linde, Laura Leontjeva, Kristaps Šoriņš, Dace Mangulsone, Jānis Ķirsis, and Jānis Ozols.
Jānis Ozols, the conductor and artistic director of the mixed choir "Mask": "The idea for this program arose in the spring of 2023 when I thought it would be nice to honor the greats of Latvian non-academic music. My first choice was the group "Pērkons" and their work. I called Juri Kulakovs and told him about this idea - he was very excited. He immediately suggested his ideas for pieces to include in the program, and also said that perhaps he would write something new specifically for our choir. Unfortunately, I never imagined that it would be my last conversation with Juri..."
