A comedy of passion and psychological tension, “TANGO DEJO 2 (DIVI)”

Have you ever felt a relationship suddenly becoming tangled in an impossible knot? A lingering glance, the scent of expensive perfume, a couple of extra glasses of wine, an awkward kiss… and voilà—you are already at the epicentre of an elegant catastrophe!

The characters of this production—Zik and his assistant Wendy—find themselves in a film noir office drama with a flirtatious aftertaste, based on the play “Unsolicited Male” by Australian playwright Ron Elisha. After two years of successful collaboration, a single evening outside the office walls disrupts their perfectly ordered work routine, and a sharp, modern tango of relationships begins. While Zik wrestles with his guilty conscience and tries to save the situation, Wendy attempts to determine whether her boss is a reliable partner or yet another man with hidden motives. But they are not alone in this tangled dance of emotions. Their best friends, or their very own “inner voices”, come to the rescue, offering ‘’brilliant’’ advice that only makes the situation more complicated. Each has their own interpretation of what may and may not be done in an office romance.

Since everything essential—the illusions, misunderstandings and power games—takes place inside the characters’ heads, provocative director J. J. Džilindžers has boldly stripped this production of everything superfluous. This is a performance that you do not simply watch—you experience. There are no sets on stage. No props. No boundaries! There is only pure, electrifying acting and a space that unleashes your imagination at full power. Physically, the actors have nothing, yet at the same time, they have everything. Every movement and every glance creates a world that exists for one evening only—and inside your head. Here, the audience becomes a co-creator, seeing and feeling far more than is actually present on stage.

To convey such a flight of imagination, truly exceptional talent is required. On stage, the stars of the cinema hit “The Perfect Ones”—Mārtiņš Egliens, Dārta Daneviča and Linda Kalniņa—join forces with the charismatic Mārtiņš Upenieks to create such chemistry that the auditorium genuinely heats up. This is an intellectual fencing match in which sharp heels and even sharper dialogue take the place of épées, inviting us to laugh wholeheartedly at how virtuously we manage to complicate our own lives. The performance offers subtle irony and perceptive jokes about the differences in the ways men and women think. About how differently two people can experience the same evening, and how fragile the boundaries are between flirting and power, desire and manipulation. In this production, J. J. Džilindžers plays with the audience’s perception, making us both laugh and reflect.
