For many years in a row, bonfires are lit simultaneously on the shores of the Baltic Sea on the last Saturday of August, celebrating the Night of Ancient Fires. In every country along the Baltic Sea coast, the bonfires are a tribute to the memory of those who fought for their nation's independence and symbolize the unity of the Baltic Sea coastal residents.
The tradition of the Night of Ancient Fires was initiated by the Finns in 1987, marking the 70th anniversary of Finland's declaration of independence. In Latvia, the first Night of Ancient Fires bonfire was lit in 1996 in Pāvilosta and a few years later on the coast of Roja. The first bonfire for the Night of Ancient Fires on the Vidzeme coast was lit in 2009 in Liepupe.
