Seven Characters in Search of Andrejs Upīts

The Andrejs Upīts Memorial Museum in Riga, at 38-4 Brīvības Street, invites you to the museum's 50th anniversary event “Seven Characters in Search of Andrejs Upīts” on December 4, 2024, at 6:00 PM.

“On December 4, 1974, the Andrejs Upīts Memorial Museum was opened without the mandatory thematic exhibition – at the far wall of the hall, there was only a composition of the writer's images created by Gunārs Binde, a large chair in the center of the room, and on the opposite wall, an insight into the fates of Upīts' works today: Ilmārs Blumbergs' set design sketches for the tragedy “Joan of Arc”, as recalled in “In the Middle of a Lifetime Role” by the museum's first director, Margarita Miglāne.

Fifty years later, on Andrejs Upīts' birthday, visitors are invited to the same museum hall for a performance “Seven Characters in Search of Andrejs Upīts,” where not only professional actors but also museum staff will embody characters created by the writer.

The event director, Sanita Duka, says: “We are developing the script and the concept of the event together with the staff of the Andrejs Upīts Memorial Museum. Our goal is to explore lesser-known pages of Upīts' works in an engaging way for the public and to present the most well-known ones from an unusual perspective. We will use the method of play theatre, and thus seven characters will arrive at the event, seeking to understand their relationships with the author in contemporary times.”

Until the end of the year, museum visitors will have the opportunity to view the photo exhibition “50 Years as 28 Photo Moments”, which will also be opened on December 4 at 6:00 PM, featuring both former museum staff and guests at various significant events for the museum.

The event features actors Anta Aizupe, Emīls Krūmiņš, Andrejs Upīts' great-great-grandson Artūrs Strautiņš (music group “Triānas Parks”), and director Sanita Duka.
