Dailes Theatre Add an Object

Dailes Theatre is a professional Latvian theatre, founded on November 19, 1920 in Riga, Lāčplēša Street 25 (now the location of Jaunais Rīgas teātris). The first performance at Dailes Theatre was a staging of Rainis' play "Indulis and Ārija". The theatre's main director from its founding until 1965 was Eduards Smiļģis. Since 1977, the theatre has been located at 75 Brīvības Street, in a building designed by Latvian architect Marta Staņa. During the Soviet era, the theatre was known as the J. Raiņa Latvian SSR State Academic Dailes Theatre. Currently, the main director of Dailes Theatre is Dž. Dž. Džilindžers.

During Eduards Smiļģis' time, the theatre became a part of Latvian cultural canon, and the theatre building was included in the architecture and design section of the canon.
