Džūkste Fairy Tale Museum Add an Object
Džūkste Fairy Tale Museum is located in the former Lancenieki School building, where from January 1883 to March 1903, teacher, writer, collector and researcher of fairy tales and legends, Ansis Lerhis-Puškaitis (1859–1903), also known as the Latvian Fairy Tale Father, lived and worked. The museum is dedicated to him and Džūkste fairy tales, as well as the preservation of the local cultural heritage, both material and intangible.
The museum was established in 2001. In 2010, the museum was included in the Tukums Museum. In 2011, the restoration of the museum building began, during which a floorboard with Ansis Lerhis-Puškaitis' signature from 1889 was found.
The museum offers the opportunity to listen to Džūkste fairy tales and legends and to share personal experiences. The museum encourages not only listening to fairy tales but also creating them - both stories and characters. Here, it is possible to watch puppet shows and participate in them, as well as visit exhibitions. Next to the museum, in the old Lancenieki School fruit garden, an outdoor exhibition called "Following in the Footsteps of the Fairy Tale Father" has been created, where the Secret House is displayed and interactive educational games are played. Here, it is not just a tangible exhibition - stories are often passed down orally, and each of them deserves to be recorded and never forgotten, which is what the museum invites everyone to do.
