Ērģeme Castle Ruins Add an Object

Ērģeme Castle Ruins are located in Ērģeme, near the Estonian border, and are a nationally significant historical and archaeological monument where regular archaeological excavations take place. The castle was built a long time ago, in the 14th century. Nowadays, the quite impressive 14th-16th-century Livonian Order castle ruins with a round corner tower four stories high can still be seen. In 2021, as part of the ERDF co-financed project "Culture, History, Architecture in the Gauja and Time Periods," the restoration of the Northern Tower of Ērģeme Castle Ruins was completed.

In the vicinity of the castle ruins, there is an ancient park where you can take a walk and contemplate some legends associated with the castle. Legends adorn almost all of the castle ruins, but Ērģeme has the peculiarity that a legend has proven to be true - there was a myth that more than 100 knights of the Order were captured and buried alive, and then their heads were cut off. In some excavations, mass graves were discovered, proving the truth of the legends. And who knows which legend is still true...

If you are interested, you can walk from Ērģeme Castle Ruins to the ruins of Ērģeme Church via the built wooden footpath.
