Grīziņkalna Park Add an Object
Grīziņkalns is not just a well-known recreational park, but a large neighborhoodinside the railway loop, bordered by Brasas, Teikas, Purvciems, Avotustreets, and the city center. The boundaries are Artilērijas Street, Krāsotāju Street, LienesStreet, Avotu Street, Augusta Deglava Street, railway, Brīvības Street, TallinasStreet, and Aleksandra Čaka Street.
The name comes from the merchant and sorter of Riga, Grīzens (Griesen),to whom in the 18th century belonged a wooden manor. After the construction of the railway line,the mansion of Grīziņmuiža remained in the current Purvciems area, but on the other side of the railway embankment,in the sand dune, in 1903, the planting of trees began, which werenamed Grīziņkalna Park or "1905 Park". Grīziņkalns is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The neighborhood is unique with both the late 19th century wooden residential buildings and Art Nouveau buildings,as well as several architectural monuments, squares, and parks. Grīziņkalna Parkoffers not only recreation but also sports events in the adjacent "Ghetto Games"area, as well as the opportunity to let your pets run freely in the dog park.
