Janis Akuraters Museum Add an Object
In 1933, poet Janis Akuraters' family built a wooden house for themselves in Torņakalns according to architect Verner Vitands' design. In 1991, the Janis Akuraters Museum was established in this house. The museum's exhibition is located in the Fireplace Room, Dining Room, Bright Salon, and the poet's wife Marija's room. The interior design of the Akuraters' house features a functionalist style plan with mid-19th century Biedermeier style furniture, combining authentic period pieces with reproductions made in the 1920s and 1930s. The mission of the museum is to preserve the authenticity of the house built in the 1930s and its interior, to create and maintain public interest in Janis Akuraters, a recipient of the Fatherland Award, a poet and writer who was silenced during the occupation years (1876–1937). Today, the writer's house is one of the cultural centers of Pardaugava, where writers, artists, musicians, actors, and students gather for theater workshops.
