Liepaja has a total of about 70 buildings belonging to the Art Nouveau style, the majority of them being objects of national romanticism and statenistic Art Nouveau, which were built after 1910, when the city experienced a lot of construction. Although the first buildings with Art Nouveau decorative motifs appeared in Liepaja around 1903, there are not many buildings in the early period - eclectically decorative Art Nouveau - and their plastic decoration is minimal. There are also relatively few neoclassical objects that, shortly before World War I, like in Riga, marked a return to classical values, while still retaining Art Nouveau elements.
The city's special ornamentation includes decorative finishes in the historical stairwells, about 15 of which were created during the Art Nouveau period. Wooden doors, metal gates, moldings, stoves, floors, and other evidence of Liepaja residents' taste and craftsmanship have also been preserved.
