Canal Promenade Add an Object

The city canal was formed after the demolition of Riga's fortifications and partially filling in the defensive moat. The length of the city canal is 3.2 km. Gradually, from 1859 onwards, plantings were created on both sides of the canal. The first plantings were arranged following the proposal of the Lübeck engineer A. Wendt. The planting continued from 1863 to 1879 under the supervision of the gardener Reims. From 1880, when the City Council established the Garden Management led by G. Kufalt, the plantings were significantly transformed. Higher demands were placed on garden art. Along the canal promenade, there are two Ginkgo trees, American sweetgum, 20 local tree species, as well as 110 introduced tree varieties. In the plantings of the canal promenade, A. Folcs' nymph fountain was installed near the Latvian National Opera in 1887. In the 1930s, A. Zeidaks created large flowerbeds in the canal promenade, but since 1982, carpet beds have been arranged here. In 2000, the Riga City Council improved the canal.
