Karosta Prison

Built in the early 20th century for the needs of the Karosta Hospital, the Karosta Garrison Prison was never actually used as a hospital. Since its construction, it has served as a temporary disciplinary place for naval ratings and non-commissioned officers.
As early as 1905, the prison housed sailors involved in the events of the 1905 Revolution. The area opposite the prison became a burial ground for many inmates who were executed right by the prison fence. Throughout its history, the building has served as a detention facility for both the Soviet Army and the Latvian Navy. The last inmates left their notes on the walls of the prison cells as recently as 1997.
Karosta Prison is home to the Karosta Visitor Center. Tourists have the opportunity to take a tour of the prison, experience the reality show 'Behind Bars,' and for those who crave a more intense experience, spend a night in a prison cell. Guided tours can be arranged, bicycles can be rented, comprehensive information about Karosta can be obtained, souvenirs can be purchased, and visitors can watch the short film 'Karosta,' dress up in various military uniforms from different eras, and take photos with interesting props.
