Latvian War Museum Add an Object
The War Museum was established in September 1916 in memory of the Latvian Riflemenbattalions who fought in World War I.
Since 1919, the museum has been located in the Powder Tower. In 1937, the construction of a new museum building began, based on the project by architect Artūrs Galindo. After Latvia's accession to the Soviet Union, the museum, which was not in line with the new political views, was closed.
In 1957, a decision was made to open the Latvian SSR Revolution Museum in the building, which existed until 1990. After the restoration of independence, the name was changed back to the War Museum.
Today, the museum's exhibition consists of materials on the military history of the Baltic region spanning many centuries, with a special emphasis on documentary reflections of 20th century events and the role of the national armed forces in Latvia's most challenging historical moments.
Since 1997, the Latvian War Museum has been a member of the International Association of Military History.
