Latvian National Art Museum isthe largest art museum in Latvia, housing over52,000 works of art by Latvian, Baltic and Russian paintersand sculptors. The museum is visited by approximately 100,000 visitors per year. 1869 is considered the year of the museum's establishment - whenthe City Painting Gallery was opened. In 1905, it was renamed the CityArt Museum, 1940. - theLSR Soviet Art Museum, 1945. - the LSR State Latvian and Russian ArtMuseum,1964. - the LSR ArtMuseum. 1987. the museum was renamed the State Art Museum,and 1995. the Latvian National Art Museum was established.Initially, the museum mainly housed foreign artists' works from severalprivate collections. The collection of Latvian authors' works was promoted by Vilhelms Purvītis - the museum's director from 1919 to 1940.
