Museum of the Occupation of Latvia Add an Object
In 1993, Professor Paulis Lazda from the University of Wisconsin submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia to establish a new museum on the period of occupation in Latvia from 1940 to 1991. The establishment and maintenance of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in the spring of 1993 was funded by the foundation of the 50-year occupation museum of Latvia, which was sold in 2006 to become the Association of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. On July 1, 1993, the first exhibition of the museum was opened in the premises of the former Latvian Riflemen's Museum.
On November 18, 2012, in the temporary premises of the museum on Raiņa Boulevard 7, the largest donor plaque of the museum was unveiled, honoring those who have made donations of over 5000 lats. One of the major donors mentioned is Aina Galēja-Dravniece, the founder of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia scholarship, which supported the internship of Latvian-American youth at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. She also provided financial support for organizing the museum's traveling exhibitions.
