Latvian Sports Museum Add an Object
Latvian Sports Museum is a museum in Riga dedicated to the development of physical culture and sports in Latvia.
The museum opened in 1990 and is based on the collection of sports history enthusiast and collector Voldemārs Šmidbergs.
The idea of establishing the Sports Museum emerged as early as the 1930s, when circus athlete Kārlis Vītoliņš handed over his sports awards to Voldemārs Šmidbergs. In 1974, Šmidbergs donated his collection to the state. In 1985, it was decided to establish the sports museum, which was opened on January 1, 1990. In February 1992, the museum moved to the recently restored complex in Vecrīga. Since 2001, the museum has been located at Alksnāja iela 9.
The Latvian Sports Museum displays medals, trophies, awards, documents, programs, photographs, posters, albums, sports equipment and clothing, sports memorabilia, audio and video materials, and periodicals.
