Liepaja Museum Add an Object
The founder and longtime director of Liepaja Museum was educator, artist, and folk art researcher Janis Sudmalis (1887-1984). The museum was established in 1924, but the beautiful building on Kurmajas Prospekts 16/18 was acquired for the museum's needs later, in 1935. On May 9, 1937, after renovation work had been completed, Liepaja Museum was ceremoniously opened to visitors. Currently, the museum's collection contains more than 120,000 objects, and the museum's halls showcase the history of Liepaja and South Kurzeme, starting from the Stone Age to the 19th century. Visitors can also explore an exposition dedicated to the life and work of woodcarver Mikels Pankoks (1894-1983). The museum houses several exhibition halls where new art exhibitions are periodically displayed.
