Particularly noteworthy is August Bīlenšteins (1826 – 1907), a pastor of the German congregation and a distinguished researcher of the Latvian language and ethnography. For almost 40 years, he served in the church, dedicating time to the study of the Latvian language, ethnography, folk building traditions, and hillforts.
