Monument in memory of the victims of communist genocide in the Abrene district

The monument was unveiled in the center of Balvi on August 23, 2006. The stone, shaped like the contours of Latvia by sculptor Matias Janson, symbolizes the land torn apart by the path of pain. The second symbolic rift represents Abrene and six parishes separated from Latvia. The plaque on the monument reads "The only sacredness on earth is life."

The monument is dedicated to the deportees of the Abrene district, who were deported during the major deportations as well as those who were arrested, destroyed, and suffered during other periods of the Soviet regime.
