Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station

The construction of the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station in the 1960s marked the beginning of the history of the city of Aizkraukle. In 1967, the former village of P. Stučka, where the builders of the power station lived, became a city.

The construction of the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station was completed very quickly - in five years, from 1961 to 1966. The construction conditions of the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station can be considered relatively complex, as the location was characterized by difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions. The location of the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station had an unfavorable bed - clayey sand, but despite this, a relatively high head was achieved, which provides greater power for the hydroelectric power station.

With ten hydroelectric units (HUs), the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station is the largest hydroelectric power station in the Baltic States and the second largest in the European Union. The first hydroelectric unit of the Pļaviņu Hydroelectric Power Station was commissioned in December 1965, and the power station was fully operational in 1968, according to the State Commission for Power Plants.
