Ruins of Rēzekne Castle Add an Object

In the well-fortified Rēzekne Castle Hill, about 15 meters high, there was an ancient Latgalian castle from the 9th to the 12th century. To enter the castle, one had to cross a drawbridge, pass through three iron gates, and along the road that led along the eastern wall, enter the outer bailey. As the castle was a strategically important object, it was sought to be occupied by the Russians, Lithuanians, and Poles, but it was completely destroyed by the Swedes in 1656-1660. Afterwards, it was not restored as a fortress. Today, the castle hill is the most prominent and visited place in Rēzekne. It offers a charming view of the city center and the old trading part of the city. In the beginning of 2003, near Rēzekne Castle Hill, on the territory of the company "Rēzeknes Ūdens", a model of Rēzekne Castle was placed. The author of the model is Edmunds Smans, a teacher at Rēzekne 14th vocational school. The castle model can be seen only during the tourist season - from April to October. The square at the foot of the castle hill is named after Bishop Jāzeps Rancāns (1886-1969).
