Prayer House of Saint Nicholas Old Believers in Rēzekne Add an Object
The Prayer House of Saint Nicholas Old Believers is the only wooden church in Rēzekne. The Rēzekne Old Believers' Prayer House is built as a single-naved structure. The building is constructed in a classical log cabin style with a cruciform design. The current cladding, apparently, was added in 1898 when the log cabin was placed on a brick foundation.
The Prayer House of Saint Nicholas Old Believers is famous for its three bells. They were cast in bronze and silver in 1905. The work was carried out by A. S. Lavrov's society in Gadchino. The largest bell weighs 4832 kg and is the largest bell in the Baltic states. Its tongue alone weighs 200 kg. Legends say that the silver bell was cast from the silver rubles donated by the Old Believers. Nowadays, there is a museum open in the premises of the Rēzekne Old Believers' cemetery parish. It contains information about the daily life, lifestyle, and cultural environment of the Old Believers in Latgale. The museum's exhibition also reflects the history and ethnography of the parish.
