Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Rēzekne Add an Object
The Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God is located in the city center square, opposite the monument "Vienoti Latvijai" and the city council building. The church is a nationally significant architectural monument. After a visit to Rēzekne by Emperor Nicholas I of Russia, a decision was made in 1834 to build an Orthodox church in the city. Construction work began in 1840 based on a design developed by St. Petersburg architects Dāvids Viskonts and Šerlemans Bodē II. Its consecration took place on June 25, 1846, in honor of the birth of the Virgin Mary. Just eight years after the consecration, in 1854, due to poor brick quality and incompetence of the builders, the church was on the verge of collapse. The church was temporarily closed and underwent repairs to address the shortcomings. During this time, the church acquired the appearance that it is known for today.
