Cathedral of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus in Rēzekne Add an Object

The Cathedral of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus in Rēzekne is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic parish of the Riga Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rēzekne-Aglona. Initially, a wooden church was built in this place in 1685. It was rebuilt in 1750 and later in 1887, it burned down during a thunderstorm. After that, in 1893 (some sources say 1888), the current brick temple began to be built. The first worship services in the church were held in 1900, and on November 19 of the same year, it was consecrated by Dean Kazimirs Lušpinijs. The construction was fully completed in 1902. The author of the project was the civil engineer Florian Viganovskis from the Riga Polytechnic Institute, who had already built the Church of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus in Viļaka (which has more pronounced Gothic features than the later built Rēzekne church). Due to a lack of financial resources, some deviations from the project's original design were made during the construction of the Rēzekne church.[2] In 1995, the then Pope John Paul II granted the cathedral status to the church. As a result, the cathedral became the center of the Rēzekne-Aglona diocese with the bishop's seat.
