This was the first major artistically designed monument in the province of Latvia,
built to commemorate World War I and the fight for freedom. The monument was unveiled on October 1, 1922. In 1925, it became the official memorial for the fallen fighters of the 4th Valmiera Infantry Regiment. The sculpture 'Ancient Latvian Soldier' was created by the sculptor Emīls Melderis-Millers. This is the only monumental construction work that belongs to the Latvian art movement of cubism.
