St. Nicholas Orthodox Sea Cathedral
The cathedral is the visual and spiritual landmark of Karosta. The church was designed and built in accordance with the 17th-century Russian Orthodox church style, with a central dome and four side domes symbolizing the Son of God, Jesus Christ, with the four apostles.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1901, and Russian Tsar Nicholas II, along with his family and high-ranking officials from St. Petersburg, participated in the solemn ceremony of laying the cathedral's foundation stone. The first worship service and consecration of the church took place in 1903. Russian Tsar Nicholas II, along with his family and courtiers, also attended the event. At the beginning of World War I, many of the cathedral's items were evacuated to Russia, including bells and icons. The remaining items were looted by soldiers of the German occupation army. In the 1930s, the temple was adapted for the needs of the Lutheran congregation of the Liepaja garrison. When creating Karosta as a secret, closed territory, the Soviet occupation army turned it into a sports hall, sailor and soldier cinemas, and a so-called "red corner." To somewhat suppress the excellent acoustics and allow viewers to understand the plot of sound films, the central dome area was filled with concrete.
