Northern Forts Add an Object
The Northern Forts are part of the Liepaja Fortress. The fortress was built in the late 19th century and early 20th century to protect the Liepaja naval base from possible enemy attacks. The fortification system surrounded the entire city.
In November 1908, the Liepaja Fortress was dismantled, as it was recognized that its construction had been a strategic mistake. Some of the large cannons were dismantled and taken to the Kaunas Fortress in Lithuania, while others were melted down. Attempts were made to explode the artillery batteries, underground structures, and powder magazines, but it did not produce the expected result, and the remains of the newest and most modern fortress of Tsarist Russia have survived to this day.
The Northern Forts can be visited with a guide, and a team game called 'Escape from the USSR' is offered here. The essence of the game is to find a friend who has fallen into captivity of the Soviet border guards and to deliver them to the submarine.
