Blue Flag Beach Add an Object
The beach of Liepaja has been known as a popular bathing spot since the beginning of the 19th century (1830s), when more than 300 bathers visited the city. The beach in Liepaja began to be visited by the Russian tsar, his family, and court representatives. The visit of the tsar's family prompted many aristocrats to spend their summers in Liepaja in later years, and the Liepaja resort had to adapt to the sophisticated demands of bathers. The slopes, which protected the city from traveling sand, were transformed into a magnificent park. The Liepaja beach strip is approximately 50-80 meters wide during calm weather, and its length is about 8 kilometers. The beach has white, very fine sand. After storms, larger or smaller pieces of amber can often be found on the Liepaja beach. In 1999 and 2000, the Liepaja beach received the Blue Flag certificate - an award promoting the Blue Flag. Since the summer season of 2001, the Blue Flag has been raised on the Liepaja beach. The Blue Flag is the world's most popular tourism eco-certificate, which is awarded to beaches based on 29 criteria, including water quality, environmental information and education, and infrastructure and service areas.
