4 museums in Riga to visit with children.
Many museums are keeping pace with the times and striving to make their exhibitions more interesting for adults, children and young people alike. More and more visitors can become involved in museum life by exploring and participating.
Railway Museum. 2a Uzvaras Boulevard, Riga.
The Railway Museum offers an insight into the history of railways in Latvia and boasts the largest collection of broad-gauge rolling stock in the Baltics! A visit to the museum can provide the feeling of being on a journey, as well as an opportunity to learn how train traffic is managed and how various devices operate. The museum is also a place where researchers of railway history, writers and artists find information. Families with children and school students explore railways in action and relax.
Families, groups of friends, tourists and all visitors are invited to try various activities created by the museum: a ride on a handcar, children’s birthday parties, walks through the rolling-stock collection, locomotive sketching, industrial hikes and other activities suitable for groups of different ages and interests.
The activity is also available as an outreach programme—in a school or kindergarten.
To teach children how to behave on a railway platform and near the tracks, and how to cross tracks without endangering their safety, the Latvian Railway History Museum offers preschool and school groups a free educational event for pupils in Grades 1–12—the SAFETY LESSON.
Zuzeum, 101 Lāčplēša Street
Zuzeum is home to the Zuzāns Collection. It is the world’s largest private collection of Latvian art. Zuzeum is a place to meet and discover contemporary art from Latvia and around the world. The art museum was founded in 2020 by art collector and philanthropist Jānis Zuzāns.
Zuzeum establishes both regional and international partnerships to promote the exchange of art and ideas and attract new audiences.
Since June 2025, Zuzeum has been a state-accredited museum. This important achievement attests to the institution’s professionalism, sustainable operation and significant contribution to preserving and promoting Latvia’s cultural heritage.
Professional art historians and art mediators are ready to lead tours, talking about art and architecture. Tours can be adapted for children and are available in several languages.
It is also possible to celebrate a child’s special occasion at the museum, combining learning with fun, art, play and the joy of spending time together.
Futurimo Riga—Science Centre. 1 k6 Meža Street, Riga
Futurimo Riga is not a traditional museum, but it is educational and enables visitors to learn a great deal through participation.
This science centre of Riga Technical University allows visitors young and old to learn how the world works, what the laws of science are, and how engineering and technology are already improving people’s lives—and will continue to do so in the future. The centre aims to inspire children’s interest in engineering by giving them the opportunity to connect it with their future careers.
Corporate events for adults and parties for children can both be held here. During a party, a private room is provided, where guests may bring their own food and drinks, while children also have access to the exhibition halls.
Latvian Sports Museum in Old Riga
Interest in sport in Latvia has grown considerably in recent years, as has interest in the sports museum. The museum provides information about the history of sport in Latvia, its diversity and the opportunities it offers. The museum’s aim is to inspire people to take part in sporting activities, helping to foster a healthy, creative, free and responsible society.
Birthday celebrations can also be held at this museum, with an interesting programme that children and young people—and adults, too—will enjoy:
- a tour of the museum,
- a climbing wall (with an instructor),
- puzzle assembly.
The museum is easily accessible and should certainly be included on your list of museums to visit.
