On 5 May, the CSDD Young Road Users’ Forum took place in Liepāja!

CSDD Young Cyclists’ Competition concludes in Liepāja

The fifteenth and sixteenth stages of the first round of the CSDD Young Road Users’ Forum competition took place yesterday, 5 May, in Liepāja. This time, young cyclists from Grobiņa, Rucava and Nīca municipalities, as well as the city of Liepāja, competed for the opportunity to qualify for the second round.

Nine teams took part in this competition, and all participants were accompanied by a large group of supporters. The strongest team in Liepāja Municipality was Rucava Primary School’s team “Golden Gears”: Karlīna Roze, Megija Zane Zeme, Ela Andžela Edelmane, Madars Matīss van der Vens, Rodrigo Ģēģeris, Gatis Skara and teacher Daiga Gabrūna.

Meanwhile, the city of Liepāja will be represented at the Latvian final by Liepāja A. Pushkin Secondary School No. 2’s team, named “Sunshine”. Marta Trumpika won the individual competition.

Overall results – Liepāja Municipality:

1st place: the “Golden Gears” team from Rucava Primary School; 712 points;

2nd place: the “Rucava Rules” team from Rucava Primary School; 656 points;

3rd place: the “Grobiņa Pedals” team from Grobiņa Primary School; 572 points;

4th place: the “ Nīca Bikers” team from Nīca Secondary School; 476 points;

5th place: the “ Kuki Ričuki” team from Rucava Primary School; 450 points;

6th place: the “ This is  - Nīca” team from Nīca Secondary School; 426 points;

7th place: the “Lightning Fast” team from Grobiņa Primary School; 394 points;

Overall results – Liepāja city:

1st place: the “ Sunshine” team from Liepāja A. Pushkin Secondary School No. 2; 173 points;

2nd place: the “ Six Riders” team from Liepāja A. Pushkin Secondary School No. 2; 90 points;

In the competition, the young cyclists had to demonstrate theoretical knowledge of the road traffic regulations, know how to provide first aid, be familiar with the structure of a bicycle and complete a practical cycling course.

The CSDD has been organising the Young Road Users’ Forum competition throughout Latvia for 22 years, in order to raise young road users’ interest in road safety and promote safety on the roads. As usual, the competition takes place in three rounds; the first-round events are held in various regions of Latvia from 10 April to 27 May. The next competitions will take place:

• Friday, 8 May, at 11:00 a.m., at Valkа Primary School, with teams from schools in Valkа, Strenči and Smiltene municipalities taking part;

• Monday, 11 May, at 11:00 a.m., at Balvi Gymnasium, with school teams from Baltinava, Balvi, Viļaka and Rugāji municipalities invited to take part;

• Tuesday, 12 May, at 11:00 a.m., at Alūksne Primary School, with school teams from Ape and Alūksne municipalities taking part.

The second round of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” – the Latvian final – is scheduled for 5–6 June and will be attended by the teams that achieved the highest scores in the first-round competitions in their respective regions. The third round, the European Young Road Users’ Competition, will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3 to 6 September, with the winning team from the Latvian final taking part.

To participate in the competition, students must have been born in 2003–2005, form a team of six people – three girls and three boys, come up with a team name and complete the electronic registration form on the website http://www.berniem.csdd.lv/index.php/satiksmes-drosiba/reg/konkursi. Participation in the competition must be agreed with a teacher or another adult, and the team must bring a signed school confirmation of the participation of the particular team and students in the Young Road Users’ Forum. Each team is accompanied to the competition by one or two adults – teachers or parents.

The Young Road Users’ Forum is organised by the CSDD. In developing the content of the competition, the CSDD cooperates with the National Centre for Education, which has been the CSDD’s partner in educational projects for many years. The competition is implemented by the association “For a Strong Latvia”; it is financed from OCTA funds, while the Latvian Automobile Association and the Emergency Medical Service provide support.
