This year, the Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science,
will give more than 20,000 students throughout Latvia a special gift at primary school graduation ceremonies –
the publication for school students “The Constitution in Your Pocket”, prepared by Latvijas Vēstnesis.
The publication was created as part of the centenary year of the Constitution and will serve young people both as
an aid in their studies and as a contribution to fostering their understanding of a democratic
society, the rule of law and the significance of the Constitution in their daily lives.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns: “The guiding theme of the centenary
year of the Constitution is ‘Open the Constitution!’—an invitation to discover the story of Latvia and its
fundamental law. A connection with the state must be built from childhood; therefore, it is our duty and our call to
educate young people about democratic values, so that every resident of Latvia honours the state
in which they live and strengthens it through their actions and attitudes.”
“It has always been important to speak about the values enshrined in the Constitution and to understand their
significance, but now, in light of events around the world, it is clear that these issues have become even
more important. I hope that Latvijas Vēstnesis’s publication for school students, ‘The Constitution
in Your Pocket’, will serve as a reminder of how strongly we must protect democracy, independence and
the Latvian language,” says Minister of Education and Science Anita Muižniece.
The publication for young people, “The Constitution in Your Pocket”, is one of many activities taking place during the centenary
year of the Constitution. All ninth-grade graduates will receive it at their graduation ceremony. The publication intended
for students, “The Constitution in Your Pocket”, consists of two parts. The first part tells the story of the Constitution’s creation,
with each chapter explaining the essence of the Constitution. The second part contains the Constitution itself
(in the version in force on 15 February 2022). A fact-based section has been added at the end – it
compiles amendments to the Constitution and presents a visual timeline of
constitutional regulation in Latvia.
The authors of the publication’s concept are representatives of the working group for the centenary of the Constitution. The creative
team: text – writer Jānis Joņevs; illustrations – artist Reinis Pētersons; and
design and layout – artist Juris Petraškevičs.
The 20,227 copies of “The Constitution in Your Pocket” intended for primary school graduates
will be received by 593 educational institutions throughout Latvia, while more than 3,500 copies of the publication
will be available in Latvian school libraries. The publication will also be received by diaspora
organisations outside Latvia. During the centenary year of the Constitution, an electronic version of the publication
is also planned, so that everyone interested can take part in understanding the foundations of the state.
