A. Machnev Becomes the Draughts Champion of Rēzekne

On Sunday, 9 October, the 2022 Rēzekne Open Individual Championship in 64-square draughts was held at the administrative building of the Sports Administration of the Rēzekne State City Municipality. Eleven athletes represented five municipalities – Rēzekne, Viļāni, Ozolmuiža, Ružina and Vērēmi.

The city champion was the tournament favourite and candidate master from Rēzekne, Aleksandrs Machnev. He scored seven wins and one draw. The silver medal in the men’s competition went to Viktors Kovaļovs from Ružina, who recorded four wins and two draws. Taking the third step of the podium, having lost only twice, was Rēzekne resident Guntars Naglis, just as last year.

Second overall, but the best among the juniors, was Rodrigo Jugans from Ozolmuiža, who suffered no losses but had three drawn games. The silver medal among the juniors went to Liene Malinovska from Viļāni, who lost only to the men’s and junior champions. The bronze medal among the juniors went to her sister, Linda Malinovska.

The best result among the women was achieved by the reigning Latvian champion among girls under 19, Neļa Kristīne Malahovska from Viļāni. The second-best female competitor was Sintija Diāna Potapova from Rēzekne.

The winners were presented with medals and commemorative prizes. Savoury snacks and hot drinks were provided for the participants. The next 64-square draughts tournament will take place in December, before Christmas.
