Ventspils residents invited to hand in unwanted electrical appliances and win useful prizes!

AS “Latvijas Zaļais punkts” and environmental management company SIA “Eco Baltia vide”, in cooperation with SIA “Ventspils labiekārtošanas komb1nāts”, are inviting residents of Ventspils to take part in a campaign to sort used and no longer needed electrical appliances as part of the “Easy Sorting” campaign. The campaign will take place from 1 to 31 May this year at two waste-sorting sites in Ventspils, at 47 Jēkaba Street and 8a Siguldas Street.

Everyone who brings their used appliances to a site during the campaign will be entered into a prize draw to win useful prizes, including a new television.

During the campaign, residents may hand in both large household appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, cookers, dishwashers and other appliances, as well as small appliances, such as microwave ovens, blenders, electric scales, hairdryers, food processors and other devices. In addition, used batteries and accumulators may be handed in together with the electrical appliances.

After handing in their electrical appliances at a sorting site, each participant will be able to register for the prize draw and compete for enjoyable and useful prizes, such as €50 gift cards from “Maxima” stores, as well as surprise prizes from Latvijas Zaļais punkts. A grand prize—a new television—will also be drawn among all campaign participants. The prize draw will take place in June; more information will be available at www.zalais.lv, under “News”.

All appliances handed in during the campaign will be counted in order to surpass the results of last year’s “Electronics Sortathon” campaign, during which more than 410 tonnes of equipment were sorted. After the campaign, all appliances will be sent for recycling. To ensure this, electrical equipment must be placed only in the designated area at the sorting site and must not be dismantled—for example, a refrigerator must have its compressor, a television its picture tube, and a computer its motherboard, etc.

Please note that all types of used and unusable household and electrical appliances are classified as environmentally hazardous waste because they may contain substances dangerous to the environment and human health. If batteries or electrical appliances are not sent for recycling, they may cause toxic pollution when they enter the environment, harming both nature and human health. Electrical appliances and batteries contain a number of hazardous chemicals, such as lead, cadmium, tin, mercury and others.

Please remember that, in view of the precautionary measures in force in Latvia due to COVID-19, visitors to the sorting site are asked to observe physical distancing and restrictions on gatherings. After visiting the site, you are also encouraged to wash your hands thoroughly or disinfect them.

The “Easy Sorting” campaign is organised by AS “Latvijas Zaļais punkts”, SIA “Eco Baltia vide” and “Maxima Latvija” in cooperation with partners.
