We invite you to Forest Days at the “Green Classroom”!
This April and May, as part of Forest Days, SIA “Rīgas meži” invites schoolchildren, together with their teachers, to visit the company’s environmental education project, the “Green Classroom”.
During the excursions organised as part of the project, visitors will be able to see the company’s “Norupe” tree nursery in Ikšķile Municipality, where they can learn about seedling cultivation technology: observe the sowing and filling line in operation, see young seedlings germinating in the greenhouses, and examine the mature seedlings at the nursery site before they are transported for planting in the forest. It will also be possible to see how small seeds grow into seedlings that will be used to regenerate forests in areas where trees have been felled.
In addition, at the nearby “Norupe” sawmill, visitors will be able to learn about the wood-processing process and how finished products—furniture blanks and finishing boards—are manufactured. They will also be able to visit the Daugava Forestry District of SIA “Rīgas meži”, where they can learn about the forest-management cycle, and visit the deer park to become acquainted with different forest site types and various tree and other forest-plant species. And, with a little luck, they may even spot one of the approximately 50 deer living in the area.
“Green Classroom”—the environmental education project of SIA “Rīgas meži” (lecture + excursion)
To educate and inform the public about the forestry sector and its great importance in Latvia, SIA “Rīgas meži” implements the environmental education project “Green Classroom”. The aim of the project is to provide schoolchildren and other interested persons with knowledge about what a forest is, what it provides for society, and what society can provide for the forest. “Green Classroom” offers the opportunity to learn about and observe in nature the entire development cycle of the forest and wood, from seed to sawn timber.
The “Green Classroom” project is implemented in several stages in the territory of the Daugava Forestry District of SIA “Rīgas meži”, in the Ogre area.

At the Daugava Forestry District building, visitors can learn about the forest management cycle, from planting young trees to harvesting when the forest has reached maturity. Here they can find out what work is carried out by the forestry district, what the duties of foresters are, and how forest rangers work on a daily basis.
At the Ogre Deer Park of SIA “Rīgas meži”, visitors can learn about different forest site types, identify various forest plants and animals, and compare stands of different ages.
At the company’s “Norupe” tree nursery, visitors can see how seed trees are grown, and how young tree seedlings used to plant clear-cut areas are sown, grown and cared for.
At the neighbouring “Norupe” sawmill, visitors can learn about the wood-processing process by watching logs being transformed into processed boards through a glass wall.
We invite teachers and schoolchildren to visit us on an excursion or as part of natural-science studies and explore the forest. We also invite secondary-school students to develop their own projects or scientific research papers!
