The 1st Stage of the Liepāja Open Bowling Championship Has Concluded
On Tuesday, 5 February, the 1st stage of the Liepāja Open Bowling Championship was held at the “Dzintara boulings” leisure and entertainment centre. It was organised by the “Liepājas boulinga klubs” association with the support of the City of Liepāja.
The tournament brought together 24 athletes in total, including seven from Lithuania. Apparently, the unfavourable weather and road conditions were the reason why the Lithuanians did not attend in greater numbers. The tournament also had its share of surprises, while the early stage of the championship was reflected in the results as well. It should be noted that none of the players from last year’s top five reached the final.
After six qualifying games, the finalists were Saimonas Sakalauskas with 1,009 points, Keštutis Kandrotas (1,011), Bronius Ridikas (1,018), Mihails Gņedašs (1,021), Tomas Gulbinas (1,034), Gints Dzenis (1,036), Jānis Treimanis (1,052), and Sergejs Torčuks with 1,059 points.
The final was quite closely contested overall, with just 33 points separating second place from sixth. However, Gints Dzenis, one of the championship’s longstanding participants, deserves special mention. Although he had not achieved notable success in recent years, he delivered an excellent performance in the final of the 1st stage, scoring 611 points and winning convincingly. Sergejs Torčuks also performed well, scoring 534 points. The podium was completed by Lithuanian Tomas Gulbinas, who finished just one point behind second place.
The next stage of the Liepāja Bowling Championship will take place on 5 March at 18:00 at the “Dzintara boulings” leisure and entertainment centre.
