Let us take part in the campaign “Plant Your Own Tree in Preiļi Park!”

The Preiļi Municipality Council, in cooperation with SIA “Preiļu saimnieks”, is organising the campaign “Plant Your Own Tree in Preiļi Park!”, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia. The planting of saplings will take place on 8 May from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saplings will be available for purchase on the day of planting from the delivered planting stock at the park entrance from A. Paulāna Street. Saplings may be purchased by an individual, several people together, a family, an institution, a company or a group of friends—in short, by anyone who would like to see their own tree or shrub growing in Preiļi Park.

Zenta Igolniece, Head of the Municipal Services Department of SIA “Preiļu saimnieks”, explained that, following the professional recommendations of landscape architect Ilze Janele, Preiļi Park is maintained and managed according to the principles for maintaining historic landscape parks. Landscape parks were separated from their surroundings and designed for undisturbed recreation; therefore, they should be enclosed areas separated from city streets by trees or shrubs. Taking the specialist’s recommendations into account, during the campaign both Dutch lindens and various trees and shrubs suitable for sunny and shady locations will be planted in Preiļi Park.

In early spring, old trees along the park on A. Paulāna Street were felled because they posed a danger to the residential buildings on the opposite side of the street. The work was carried out with the approval of the Cultural and Monument Protection Inspectorate and the Nature Conservation Agency.  During the planned campaign, a protective belt of “Maluch” forsythias will be created along the park on A. Paulāna Street. In the northern part of the park, between the open-air stage and A. Paulāna Street, the linden avenue created in ancient times will be restored, and Dutch lindens will be planted to continue the avenue in place of the felled old and dangerous trees. Shrub plantings are also planned around the benches in the park. This is necessary so that the benches installed last year fit into the overall park landscape and so that, when sitting on a bench, people have a kind of personal ‘paradise’ in which to rest for a while. The plantings are planned to consist of Japanese spirea of the “Macrophylla” variety, which is suitable for sunny locations, rugosa roses, the green-leaved species of ninebark, lilacs, forsythias, hydrangeas and mock oranges. Chestnut trees are planned to be planted by the park’s open-air stage.
