Last weekend, World Egg Day was celebrated in Latvia on an unprecedented scale. It is observed around the world every year on the second Friday of October, highlighting the exceptional versatility of eggs. To mark the 25th anniversary of World Egg Day, an exciting programme of events was prepared for the residents and visitors of Riga and Iecava, enjoyed by young and old alike over two days packed with activities.

This year, too, the event’s organiser, Balticovo JSC, encouraged residents in both Riga and Iecava to celebrate the egg—the small powerhouse of nature—with a special programme. On Saturday, 9 October, nearly 30 different poultry breeds gathered in central Riga, inviting every passer-by to admire their beauty with their calls. Meanwhile, in Riga and Iecava, residents and visitors were once again delighted by the travelling street food restaurant, which served freshly prepared and delicious egg dishes.

The travelling breakfast restaurant stopped at seven popular locations. On 8 October, it could be visited in Riga near the VEF Culture Palace, the University of Latvia Academic Centre, the Mūkusalas Business Centre, on Kaļķu Street and at Āgenskalns Market. On the morning of 9 October, the breakfast restaurant travelled to Iecava, Latvia’s home-grown egg capital, while around midday it filled Esplanade Park with a wonderful aroma.

“Continuing the traditions we have started, we are delighted that this year, too, we managed to celebrate World Egg Day on such a grand scale. We treated people to delicious, fresh egg dishes and delighted passers-by of all ages with a colourful exhibition of laying birds and their eggs. Special thanks go to the Latvian Association of Small Animal Breeders, which helped us bring these beautiful poultry birds to Riga and ensure their comfort,” comments Toms Auškāps, Director of Communications and Development at Balticovo.

The exhibition of laying hens and their eggs in Esplanade Park was organised in cooperation with the Latvian Association of Small Animal Breeders “Trusis un citi”, and visitors could view more than 20 different poultry breeds and their eggs. Among them were the colourful cukurvistiņas, known as Latvia’s national treasure. This is one of the oldest local chicken breeds, which had nearly disappeared over the past 80 years. Today, breeders and enthusiasts are working to restore this chicken breed. The exhibition also featured another ancient Latvian poultry breed—the Kurzland geese, whose noble appearance aroused particularly great interest among visitors.
