Registration open for the Jūrmala MTB Cycling Marathon
Next month, on 6 October, as the cycling season draws to a close, the annual Jūrmala MTB Cycling Marathon will take place at Majori Beach. Professional cyclists, all enthusiasts of the sport, and families with children from the Pierīga region and other parts of Latvia are invited to participate. For every competitor, it will be an opportunity to test their abilities in one of four cycling distances, compete for valuable prizes, and spend an autumn Saturday in an invigorating sporting atmosphere.
The Jūrmala MTB Cycling Marathon differs from other mountain-biking competitions precisely because of its unique course, which begins and ends right on the Baltic Sea coast, making it the only competition of its kind in Latvia. The first 5 km and the final 5 km of the marathon will take participants along the shoreline, across a stretch of beach sand, followed by overgrown forest trails and, at the end of the course, asphalt. The longer competition courses are designed to allow cyclists to test their skill level on a wide variety of road surfaces. The event location remains unchanged – the distances will start at the Jūrmala Beach Centre between Ērgļu and Kaiju Streets.
This year, too, the high-level competition will delight participants with exciting and challenging sections. Licensed cyclists will be able to compete in the 47 km Sport MTB distance, which will lead through the city of Jūrmala to the forests of Priedaine and back through Babīte, while the popular People’s MTB distance will bring together individual and team riders eager for a thrilling challenge, also allowing them to cover the same 47 km route. As always, the inclusive Family MTB distance will also be offered, bringing Latvia’s most active and creative families together for a colourful 10 km parade ride along the seashore. Finally, the Children’s Ride (0.3–1 km) will invite the youngest participants to experience moments worthy of a competition.
“In the context of cycling, the Jūrmala MTB Cycling Marathon is a highly anticipated annual event that brings hundreds of cycling enthusiasts together on the seashore. In these four distances, every participant, regardless of age or level of qualification, can find something for themselves: competing for prize-winning places in the Sport distance, enjoying an energetic day in the People’s distance, spending quality time with their loved ones in the Family Ride, or introducing the youngest riders to the joy of cycling in the Children’s distance,” comments Arnis Lazdiņš, a representative of Maratoni.lv.
Throughout the day, visitors to the event venue will also be offered a variety of exciting activities during the cycling marathon: mobile food stalls, fun attractions, games and creative workshops for children, energetic music performed by DJ Kelly Elly, as well as other entertainment options. In addition, to ensure the well-being of competitors, refreshing Neptunas mineral water will be provided at several points along the course, while the technical condition of the bicycles will be carefully monitored by Velo Depo bicycle service. The event’s engaging host, Lauris Lizbovskis, will help maintain a good mood during the competition, while Latvian Catering Company will satisfy participants’ hunger after the finish.
