This spring, “Balticovo” is entering the ice-cream segment by creating two new products—a genuine plombir ice cream made according to a classic recipe and the first egg-protein ice cream in the Baltics. Responding to the rapidly growing demand for protein ice cream in Europe, “Balticovo” egg-protein ice cream will be available on store shelves in Latvia in several varieties—with vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and mango flavours. It is distinguished by its high protein and low carbohydrate content, offering a nutritionally unique alternative to conventional ice cream. Both egg-based ice creams will expand the Balticovo Premium brand’s range, which represents premium-quality lactose- and gluten-free products made exclusively using eggs laid by free-range hens.

“The egg as an integral ingredient in an ice-cream recipe represents a strategically new direction, and with it we have laid the foundation for developing the Balticovo Premium brand and product strategy. We are delighted to be the first in the Baltics to create ice cream using high-quality egg protein in the production technology,” says Toms Auškāps, Director of Communications and Development and Member of the Management Board of AS “Balticovo”.

Demand for protein products, including alternative ice creams, has grown rapidly worldwide in recent years. However, egg-protein ice cream may be considered a particularly exclusive product, with currently no comparable competitors in the Baltics.

“Keeping up with modern trends, it is clear that we need to seek out new niches and products with which to surprise consumers, as well as ways to adapt to their lifestyles. In the West and the United Kingdom, protein ice cream has already won the trust of food lovers, and we believe that products in this category could become equally popular in the Baltics. With this intellectual investment, we have announced our arrival as a new player in the ice-cream market,” explains Toms Auškāps.

Having assessed consumer behaviour, “Balticovo” currently includes both protein and classic plombir ice creams in its range. The protein ice creams are made with an egg-white base and are available in four flavours—strawberry, chocolate, mango and vanilla. This category is distinguished not only by its pure protein content, 18 g per 100 g of product, but also by its very low content of carbohydrates, sugars and fat. Only eggs laid by free-range hens have been used in the production of the new egg-protein ice cream.

Nutrition specialist Kristīne Podvisnka emphasises that eggs are an excellent source of protein and, in fact, any food containing protein can serve as an equivalent source of this nutrient. “Eggs are rich in protein and low in calories. An average-sized egg contains approximately 6 g of protein, most of which—4 g—is found in the egg white. Protein is responsible for regeneration and the production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies in the body. We can obtain egg protein in several ways—both through dietary supplements and through food, such as omelettes or pancakes made with eggs, and now through ice cream as well,” explains the nutrition specialist.

The plombir and chocolate plombir ice creams are made according to a classic homemade ice-cream recipe with egg melange—a homogeneous mixture of egg whites and yolks—as well as cream. In close cooperation with carefully selected Latvian dairy and cream producers, only high-quality local ingredients are used in the production of ice cream in this category, ensuring the quality of the product.

The new ice creams will expand the Balticovo Premium brand’s range, which already includes innovative products with higher added value—lactose- and gluten-free pancake batter mix, as well as egg-white mixture.

“Balticovo” protein and plombir ice creams can be purchased at “Maxima”, “Elvi” and “TOP” chain stores throughout Latvia. They will soon also be available at other retail outlets.
