Barbora greets 500 residents of regional care homes with food gifts on Mother’s Day

The second Sunday of May is when Mother’s Day is celebrated across Latvia every year, but this year, due to the restrictions imposed in the country, many people spent the holiday without their loved ones. Residents of social care centres, in particular, often feel especially lonely on this day, as for this or other reasons they have not seen their family members for quite some time. Therefore, launching a series of social responsibility activities in the regions, the leading online grocery store Barbora delighted 500 elderly women at nine Latvian care homes on Mother’s Day, preparing a special holiday greeting for them and bringing a smile to every face.

Taking into account the wishes expressed by representatives of the care centres, with the support of Barbora’s partners—the confectionery brand Laima, coffee producer Merrild, and body-care products brand Dove—the elderly women received carefully prepared holiday gifts on Mother’s Day containing delicious treats, aromatic coffee, and hand cream. The gifts were delivered to the care homes in compliance with the Cabinet of Ministers regulations in force. In total, the gifts reached nine regional care homes throughout Latvia: the Elderly Persons’ Residential Home in Liepāja, the “Selga” Social Care Home in Ventspils, the “Ābeles” care home in Saldus Municipality, the Smiltene care home, the “Jaunāmuiža” care home in Krustpils Municipality, the Mārciena care home in the Madona area, the “Preiļi” care home, the “Ābeļdārzs” Dagda Elderly Persons’ Care Home, and the Balvi care home, where nearly 500 elderly women spend their everyday lives together. As the elderly women themselves acknowledge, the gift prepared by Barbora was a pleasant surprise that brought genuine joy and created heart-warming holiday feelings.

The residents of the care home are very grateful and happy, because every greeting makes them feel needed and remembered. During this period, the support and love of the people around them are especially important to the elderly, so we truly appreciate Barbora’s initiative to offer us this support," says Sarmīte Kušniruka, head of the “Ābeles” Social Care Centre of the “Social Service” agency of Saldus Municipality.

“Although Mother’s Day was spent in an unusual atmosphere this year, for all of us this is not only a time for reflection, but also a time of opportunity—to help the people around us, share kindness, offer encouragement, and say thank you. Each of us approaches this holiday with different feelings, yet every woman who has devoted her care to her children deserves to feel appreciated and loved on this day. And it was precisely this feeling that, with the help of the gifts, we wanted to convey to elderly women in the regions as well,” comments Sanita Bērziņa, head of the Barbora online store.
