The Allure of French Baroque Music at Bauska Castle

On Saturday, 30 April 2016, at 6:00 p.m., the early music ensemble “Inégalité Mystique” will perform at Bauska Castle with the concert programme “Music of the French King’s Court”. At the concert, listeners will be able to enjoy works by the most distinguished French Baroque composers: M. R. de Lalande, J. F. Rebel, M. Marais, J. Ph. Rameau and J. B. Barriere.
The French musical aesthetics of the 17th and 18th centuries were shaped by the rules established by the Palace of Versailles and the king’s musical tastes. The concert will feature music written and performed for the King of France and his court.
Inégalité Mystique musicians frequently perform in Latvia’s concert halls and castles. In their everyday work, all the musicians are united by their work in the Baroque orchestra Collegium Musicum Riga. Since its first performance, the ensemble has sought its own means of expression, developing professionally and trying first to discover for themselves, and then also to reveal to listeners, why the musicians express themselves specifically through early music and historical performance. The ensemble members’
conviction is that a performing artist must seriously study the style and performance practice of the works being performed so that the performance achieves the intended affect. For some of the ensemble’s musicians, professional development is most directly connected with the Early Music Department of Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where they obtained a master’s degree in Baroque ensemble and orchestra performance. During their studies and afterwards, the musicians regularly develop their skills at various early-music courses and masterclasses in Europe and Latvia. The core ensemble has been performing together since 2007 and has recently welcomed new like-minded musicians, forming an early music ensemble and bringing together musicians who regard early music not only as their passion but also as their profession. The female ensemble members present works by 17th- and 18th-century composers and play original historical instruments and copies, using a Baroque-era pitch standard. They strive to bring their performances closer to the performance practice of that period.
