Jānis Gunārs Kalmalis’ Exhibition of Paintings “Views of Europe” at Bauska Castle

From 30 April the Bauska Castle Museum will host an exhibition of paintings, “Views of Europe,” by the classic artist and outstanding landscape painter Jānis Gunārs Kalmalis. The exhibited works allow visitors to travel in their imagination to the cities where the artist painted, including Luxembourg, Venice, Rome and London. The exhibition will open, and visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist, on 30 April at 5:00 p.m.

J. G. Kalmalis is one of the few contemporary artists who paints from nature, and does so not only in Latvia but elsewhere in Europe as well. The exhibition “Views of Europe” is a collection of the artist’s latest works, painted using the traditional technique of oil paints on canvas. The works depict European cities, landscapes, seas and harbours. A significant part of the exhibition is also devoted to Latvia as part of Europe. Every visitor to the exhibition will be able to experience the artist’s impressions and become a participant in this journey.

J. G. Kalmalis was born in Riga on 20 June 1939. He graduated from the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts and the Latvian Academy of Art, where he studied in the figurative painting class under the Latvian masters Eduards Kalniņš, Leo Svemps and Indulis Zariņš. He has participated in exhibitions since 1967 and has been a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia since 1979.

The works of the artist J. G. Kalmalis are held by the Latvian National Museum of Art, art funds in Latvia and Russia, and private collections in European countries, America and Australia. Solo exhibitions have been held in many Latvian cities, as well as in Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. He has participated in international artists’ plein-air workshops in Luxembourg and Poland. Over several years, he has developed a successful collaboration with the Ars Arrakoski Gallery in Finland.
