The Early Music Ensemble “Modus Vivendi” to Perform at Bauska Castle
In 2019, Bauska Castle Museum once again invites you to a series of early music concerts. We will open this year’s concert series
on 23 February at 5:00 p.m. with a concert by the early music ensemble “Modus Vivendi”, “Renaissance Songs in the Mother Tongue”.
Music historians generally refer to the period between 1450 and 1600 as the Renaissance era in the evolution of European musical culture. In the 16th century, one of the principal musical genres was the madrigal. Translated from Latin, matricale means a song in the mother tongue. The origins of the madrigal genre can be found in folk poetry and the monophonic pastoral song of the Renaissance. Birdsong, the noise of cavalry, quarrelling women in the marketplace—these are just some of the scenes that will unfold in the concert’s overall dramatic structure through the madrigal genre.
The early music ensemble “Modus Vivendi” was founded in January 2006, beginning its activities at Jumprava Evangelical Lutheran Church. The ensemble’s founder and long-time director was conductor Kaspars Ādamsons, who has handed over the leadership to the current director, conductor Pēteris Vaickovskis. The ensemble’s repertoire spans the broad Renaissance and Baroque periods, including works by highly renowned composers as well as seeking opportunities to discover works by lesser-known authors.
The ensemble’s core line-up consists of: Maruta Mikožāne /soprano/, Daiga Būda /soprano/, Baiba Mežsēta /alto/, Miķelis Zumbergs /tenor/ and director Pēteris Vaickovskis /bass/.
The concert programme includes works by Clément Janequin (1485–1558), Hans Leo Hassler (c. 1564–1612), and others.
