The Film “Tale of Tales” to Be Screened at Bauska Castle

On 29 September 2017 at 7:00 p.m., the Bauska Castle Ceremonial Hall will screen “Tale of Tales”, a fairy-tale film for adults directed by Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone—one of the most provocative fairy-tale films of all time, which premiered in 2015.
The film is based on the works of the 17th-century Neapolitan court poet Giambattista Basile (Giambattista Basile), which contain the seeds of the tales of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in their early, deliberately unembellished versions. These fairy-tale themes were later developed by Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.
The film is distinguished by lavish sets, exquisite costumes and breathtaking views, interwoven with the director’s fantasies, visions and dark humour, which sharply contrast with the familiar Hollywood “fairy-tale films”. This is the director’s first film in English, simultaneously enchanting, surprising and shocking.
Thanks to the film’s €12 million budget, it features outstanding Hollywood actors: Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones, John C. Reilly, Shirley Henderson and Bebe Cave.
Plot: A king of one land, a powerful lover, has enjoyed everything this world has to offer, but falls in love with the voice of a stranger… A queen who desperately wants a child is prepared to do anything to conceive one—and later to protect it—and so agrees to a dark bargain… A lonely widowed ruler tries to marry off his only daughter against her will, but gets far more than he bargained for… Three stories, three fairy tales, three lessons from lands beyond the ninth kingdom, whose inhabitants are so much like ourselves.
The film was entered in the competition at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
